Bringing Magic to the Birthing Space

Updated: Dec 5, 2023

Close your eyes and let the scene paint itself. A hospital room. What words come to mind? Sterile, empty, efficient—almost too efficient—blank, and a hint of coldness lingers in the air. But for a birth, this setting poses a challenge, don't you think?

Firstly, think about it physiologically. We crave warmth, familiarity, a safe cocoon that feels as cozy and comforting as home. Just as cats scout for the safest spot to usher their babies into the world, humans instinctively seek that same sanctuary. That energy, that vibe— it cues our bodies that it's safe to soften, to open, to release. Now, the second reason is more practical. Imagine every provider walking in and pausing to think, "Wow, the energy in this room is something else." It's not just a feeling; it's a proven way to grab attention from your nurses, your midwife, or your OB.

So, here's a handful of magic tricks to transform that hospital space into your sacred haven:

1. Dim the lights. All of them. Let mood lighting take the stage. Birth's a physiological dance, and a softly lit space sets the perfect rhythm.

2. Enter mood lighting: Electronic candles, tea lights, warm-toned battery-powered lights, or perhaps galaxy lights and string lights—they all add a touch of enchantment.

3. Tune the background noise. Replace the endless beeps with serenity. A Spotify Spa channel or gentle instrumental tunes can weave that Zen vibe. Or maybe, there's a playlist that speaks to your soul.

4. Bring home's comforts. Your pillow, that favorite throw blanket, the cozy slippers, the snug bathrobe, the labor gown—these simple touches create an oasis of comfort.

5. Radiate positivity. It's more than a tip; it's a fundamental truth. Your energy—your vibes—matter. Fill that room with all the positivity you've got.

And here's a bonus to amplify the magic:

-Add a hint of essential oils (if Mom's okay with them). A diffuser or a touch of oil on a cotton pad can infuse the space with soothing scents.
